Mung Chiang

Mung Chiang started serving as the 18th President of Northwestern University in July 2026. Previously, he was the President of Purdue University from January 2023 to June 2026 and prior to being elected president he was the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering from 2017 to 2022. Prior to that, he was the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University.

Chiang received his BS (1999), MS (2000) and Ph.D. (2003) from Stanford University and an Honorary Doctorate in Science (2024) from Dartmouth College. He founded the Princeton EDGE Lab in 2009, co-founded several startup companies and industry consortia since the early years of edge computing, has 26 U.S. patents, and co-authored two textbooks based on his massive open online courses. For his research in communication and wireless networks, he received the NSF Alan T. Waterman Award (2013), Guggenheim Fellowship (2014), and IEEE Founders Medal (2025). He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
